I would agree that MaxOSaiX gives by far the best results for a standard mosaic (all pictures the same size) because it actually matches the content of each tile. And played with some of the free products for Mac. AndreaMosaic is great (I think you ned to install WINE for it to work properly, but it does.

Our standard high resolution download is over 300 megapixels, or about 18,000 x 18,000 pixels, and it's $39 to download, and all the pictures would come out sharp even if you were to print it 5 feet by 5 feet. What can I customize about my photo mosaic?

You are the creator, artist, author, maker, and designer. Mosaically is your tool, your ally ;) your paintbrush for your art. You design the mosaic by picking the big picture, and adding all the photos that goes inside it. Then Mosaically will initially arrange them for you, but you have full control over exactly which photo goes to which spot. How big the small photos are. How much to colorize and superimpose the overall mosaic, or each individual tile. It's not much different than if you were to create it from scratch in Photoshop yourself manually placing each photo in the best spot manually. You can do that on Mosaically if you so choose. Just pick a blank white image as your big picture, and you will simply end up with a blank collage of photos, which you can manipulate into your big picture. Mosaically just automatically crops your pictures by detecting faces, and generates the initial positions for you to speed things up. But that's really just the final polishing at the end. Much like how the bulk of the work of a photographer or a painter is choosing their subject, the bulk of your creativity is choosing your subject of your mosaic that ultimately determine your art. It's your choices that breath meaning and life. Even more so when you are collaborating with others.
